Bicycles Past and Present

In the past when bicycles were still a new technology, it was very common for people to have to spend quite a lot of money on them and they were mostly considered tools for the rich. If a person of limited means was to purchase a bicycle, they likely would have had to spend six months worth of wages just to buy it. Most of the earliest bicycles were made of bamboo and wood. The interesting thing too is that the wheels were also made of wood. The classic bikes with a huge front bicycle wheels and a small back wheel were made in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

One quite interesting aspect of such bicycles is that they actually didn’t come with brakes and it was impossible to stop the giant bikes unless they slowed down to a stop first. This likely wasn’t an issue in the countryside if someone was riding but it definitely could have been a problem if a person chose to ride in a crowded area and couldn’t stop. There was not an abundance of vehicles anywhere at this time so riding on a road would only have gotten on in potential contact with carriages and the earliest vehicles.

For anyone who would like to ride one of these bikes today, it’s likely the best way would be to accomplish it in the middle of nowhere on a road with absolutely no traffic and a small group of friends to assist so that falling wouldn’t be such a big deal.
